Explore the Great Outdoors Along East Central Indiana’s Scenic Trails

We’re highlighting a few of the many trails the region has to offer. Each trail has its own unique blend of scenery, history, and adventure. So, grab your gear, pack a picnic, and explore the outdoors.

Our first stop takes us along the Wilbur Wright Trail, a historic pathway with roots dating back to 1882. Stretching 5.7 miles, the trail begins at the YMCA in New Castle and travels east to the town of Mooreland, offering a route through lush greenery and landscapes. Whether you’re walking, jogging, or cycling, you’re sure to be captivated by the beauty of this charming trail.

Next up is the Honey Creek Trail, a 5.27-mile pathway that winds its way through the quaint community of Honey Creek in Fall Creek Township. Following a former rail corridor, this trail connects three of Middletown’s parks, providing a delightful journey through nature’s bounty and small-town charm.

Seeking a sweet escape? Look no further than the Sweetser Switch Trail, a 4-mile paved rail trail that promises beautiful views and serene surroundings. This trail links the Converse Junction Trail to the Cardinal Greenway, offering a perfect escape for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

Need a quick adventure? Head over to Connersville and explore the Nickel Plate Trail, a paved .75-mile pathway that packs a punch. Right in the heart of town, enjoy a leisurely stroll or brisk jog.

Nestled near Hartford City, Indiana, this 2 mile out-and-back trail offers an escape into nature, perfect for birding, mountain biking, and road biking enthusiasts.

Head north to Summit Lake State Park for a variety of moderate to easy trails with stunning views of the lake. You’ll find endless opportunities to explore the park’s natural beauty along the Prairie Trail and Upland Forest Trail.

In addition to its diverse array of trails and parks, East Central Indiana offers many outdoor recreational opportunities for nature enthusiasts of all ages.   • Harter Park: Sitting on 68 acres, Harter Park in Union City has a playground, pool, walking trails, lakes, and a space for horseback riding.
  • Dietrich Memorial Park: Located in Middletown, Dietrich Park includes a playground, baseball field, trail, picnic area, and more!
  • Playacres Park: Located in Fairmount, Playacres Park has 12.8 acres of land, with a mile-long walking trail, a playground, benches and picnic tables, a handicap-accessible area, and more.
  • White River Park: Located along the northern banks of the White River in Muncie, the park provides public access all along the river, with White River Greenway running through it. Visitors can plan to picnic, kayak, cycle and more here.
  • Hudson Family Park: Hudson Family Park in Portland has a lake for fishing, kayaking, or canoeing, as well as walking trails, a large playground, and an amphitheater.
  • Springwood Park: Considered one of Richmond’s hidden treasures, Springwood Park has 104 acres of land, and has a 30 acre lake! The Cardinal Greenway Trail includes the park, along with other nature trails, a playground, and more.
  • Hoover Park: Hoover Park in Hartford City has nature gardens, walking trails, playgrounds, and shelter houses available for rent.
