Small Business, Big Impact: Beehive Body Co.

April 17, 2026

Beehive Body Co. and the Power of Local Entrepreneurship

Across East Central Indiana, small businesses are doing more than opening their doors—they’re creating experiences, building community, and driving local economic momentum. In downtown New Castle, Beehive Body Co. is a powerful example of what happens when entrepreneurship, resilience, and community support come together.

Recently awarded a $10,000 Main Street America Backing Small Businesses grant, Beehive Body Co. is one of just a handful of Indiana businesses—and only 400 nationwide—selected for this competitive funding. The recognition highlights not only the growth of the business, but also its impact on the community it serves.

From Basement Startup to Downtown Destination

Owner Mary Hobbs founded Beehive Body Co. in 2014, starting in her parents’ basement after leaving military service due to an injury. What began as a small operation has grown steadily over the years, moving through multiple locations before finding its home on Broad Street in October 2024.

Today, the shop offers a wide range of handcrafted products—from soaps and bath bombs to lotions and specialty items—while also creating something even more valuable: a place for people to gather, learn, and make memories.

Hobbs credits much of that success to strong local support and a deep connection to the community she calls home.

Investing in Experience and Community

The grant funding will allow Beehive Body Co. to continue evolving—not just as a retail space, but as an experience-based destination. Plans include investing in new technology for product development and expanding the store’s classroom offerings, which already host hands-on workshops, private events, and family-friendly activities.

These additions reflect a growing trend in downtown development: creating spaces where people don’t just shop—they engage. From birthday parties to bridal showers to “make-and-take” classes, Beehive is helping activate downtown New Castle in a meaningful way.

Why It Matters for the Region

From a regional economic development perspective, businesses like Beehive Body Co. are essential. They contribute to vibrant downtowns, support local job creation, and enhance quality of place by offering unique experiences that draw both residents and visitors.

Hobbs’ story also highlights the importance of entrepreneurship pipelines—how individuals with diverse backgrounds, including military service and skilled trades, can translate their experience into successful small businesses.

Just as important is the role of programs like the Main Street America grant, which provide critical support for small businesses to make investments that might otherwise take years to achieve.

Building Momentum in Downtown New Castle

Beehive Body Co. is part of a broader resurgence happening in downtown New Castle—one that is redefining the area as a destination. By blending retail, experience, and community connection, businesses like this are helping reshape how people view and engage with their downtowns.

As Hobbs shared, there is now a reason for people to travel to Henry County—and that’s exactly the kind of momentum that strengthens communities across East Central Indiana.

At Forge ECI, we celebrate stories like this because they represent more than individual success—they reflect the power of local investment, community pride, and the entrepreneurial spirit that continues to move our region forward.
