What does it take to build a strong workforce and thriving communities?

That question was at the heart of a recent learning opportunity hosted by Optimus Primary, a Ball Brothers Foundation initiative focused on helping East Central Indiana communities create pathways to economic prosperity. We joined regional leaders for a day of tours, conversations, and networking centered on education, healthcare, talent development, and quality of life. Check out more pictures and a video here.

Throughout the day, we visited several institutions that play a critical role in developing and supporting the region’s current and future workforce.

Investing in Talent Through Education

The day began at Ivy Tech Community College, where we learned more about the college’s impact on workforce development throughout East Central Indiana. From technical certifications and workforce training programs to associate degrees and transfer pathways, Ivy Tech continues to provide accessible education opportunities that align with employer needs and help residents build meaningful careers.

Our group then visited the Indiana University School of Medicine–Muncie and the Janice Fisher Learning Center. Discussions focused on healthcare education, physician training, and the importance of creating opportunities for students to pursue medical careers close to home. Programs like these are critical for strengthening healthcare access and building a pipeline of skilled professionals for communities across the region.

Building the Future of Healthcare

At Ball State University’s College of Health, we enjoyed lunch and networking before learning more about the university’s growing role in preparing healthcare professionals. Faculty and staff shared information about academic programs, research initiatives, and partnerships that are helping address workforce shortages in healthcare and related fields.

A tour of the College of Health building highlighted the innovative learning environments available to students pursuing careers in nursing, public health, counseling, social work, speech pathology, and other high-demand professions. The facility reflects Ball State’s commitment to preparing graduates to meet the evolving needs of communities throughout Indiana and beyond.

Supporting Families and Communities

The final stop of the day was Maplewood Guest House, a unique community asset that provides affordable lodging for doctors in training traveling to Muncie for classes and other learning experiences.

The tour highlighted how quality-of-life investments often extend beyond traditional economic development projects. Access to supportive resources like Maplewood Guest House helps reduce barriers for med students during stressful times while strengthening the overall healthcare ecosystem that serves the region.
